Wine Experience uncorks

3 days of libations

What: 10th annual Durango Wine Experience
Where: Downtown Durango
When: May 5-7
Info: www.durangowineexperience.com

Whether you swish or swill, Durango’s annual Wine Experience has something for everybody. The 10th annual event, which kicks off Thursday, offers three days of tastings, walk-abouts, lunches and dinners – all capped off by Saturday evening’s Grand Tasting.

“It has grown into one of the most respected tasting events in the country,” Wine Experience co-founder and owner of Seasons Rotisserie & Grill, Karen Barger.

The fun gets uncorked Thurs., May 5, starting with a seminar on the French spirit Armaganac, followed by “Have You Met Your Match,” a compare and contrast luncheon at 1 p.m. at Seasons; and “Stop and Smell the Rosés,” 3 p.m. at Cyprus.

Oenophiles will then have a full morning to recover before Friday’s seminars –  “Wines with an Altitude” and “Brandy and You” – which segue directly into the event’s signature, multi-stop downtown “Walk-About,” from 4-7 p.m. The event will feature hundreds of wines and appetizers spread among several venues including: Azul Gallery, Sorrel Sky Gallery, Rochester Hotel, Steamworks, Silk Sparrow, Lively Boutique, Overland, Cocktails and Creations, Four Leaves Winery, Urban Market Home, Second Ave. Sports and the Durango Welcome Center. (Please check in at the Strater Hotel first.)

And if all that walking makes you hungry, be sure to head over to the Kendall-Jackson Winemakers dinner, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the 5th Street Eatery. (Call the restaurant directly for reservations: 259-1377.)

With the tastebuds all tuned up, Saturday includes more seminars (“In Search of the Great White” and “Cabernet Blending”) with a short break in the action before the Grand Tasting, 3 – 6:30 p.m. under the big tent in the First National Bank parking lot. This year’s extravaganza will feature hundreds of wines, beers and spirits, hailing from right here in Colorado to all over the world. And to help soak things up, there will also be the “wildly popular” Restaurant Showcase, featuring Durango’s finest restaurants.

Over the years, the Wine Experience has donated significantly to local nonprofits. This year, proceeds will benefit the United Way of Southwest Colorado.

Tickets range from $399 for the all-inclusive Platinum Pass (which includes a Thursday evening VIP reception) to $100 for a Weekend Tasting Pass to $45 for the Friday night Walk-about.
