Old West comes alive at Strater’s summer show

What: Strater Hotel’s summer Western Music & Vaudeville Show
When: Nightly except Monday through Sept. 23. Doors open  at 7 p.m.; show at 7:30
Where: Henry Strater Theater
For info: HenryStraterTheatre.com or 247-4431

It wouldn’t be summer in Durango without some good ole vaudevillian family entertainment courtesy the Strater Hotel.

This year’s offering, aptly named the “Durango Western Music & Vaudeville Show,” is now in full swing with nightly showings (except Monday) through Sept. 23.

The show kicks off with the guitar solo and the soothing vocals of local musician Greg Ryder. The opening number immediately transports the audience back to Colorado’s Wild West days, where they are treated to funny skits, cowboy poetry and sing-along fun.

This year’s cast includes five talented artists – local and visiting – who pay tribute to the old West and generate some laughs about current day cultural trends.

Then, vaudeville takes center stage for the second half of the show, with an entertaining mix of dancing, comedy and acrobatics, to name a few. Referred to as “the heart of American show business,” vaudeville once was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in North America.

Tickets are available at HenryStraterTheatre.com, the Henry Strater Theatre Box Office or by calling 970-375-7160. Prices range from $18.50-$30, with dinner-and-show packages available.
