Enviro Center screens ‘Racing Extinction’

What: “Embrace the Earth,” a pre-Earth Day party featuring the “Racing Extinction”
When: 6 p.m., Thurs., April 14
Where: FLC Student Union Ballroom
Who: Presented by the FLC Environmental Center
Tickets: $12 advance; $15 door; $5 children 12 & under; includes free local, organic dinner

With Earth Day around the corner (April 22), Fort Lewis College’s Environmental Center is gearing up with its Earth Day pre-party, “Embrace the Earth,” on Thurs., April 14. In addition to celebrating the Earth, it is also meant to raise consciousness over the perils of climate change.

“Embrace the Earth’ strives to bring our community together to not only celebrate Earth Day, but also take action at a local level that would ultimately impact larger challenges, such as climate change,” according to Rachel Landis, director of the EC.

The event will feature a local organic dinner, TED style talks from local climate-change experts as well as a raffle for Telluride MountainFilm festival passes.

But the main event of the evening is the showing of the Sundance- and Academy Award-nominated film “Racing Extinction.”

From the Oscar-winning filmmaker of “The Cove,” Louie Psihoyos, the Discovery Channel film follows a team of artists and activists as it exposes the world’s crash course toward the possible sixth massive extinction of species. It uncovers a hidden world of never-before-seen images and covert tactics of what it calls “the two biggest drivers of world extinction:” the international wildlife trade and the oil and gas industry.

But all is not lost. “The ‘Racing Extinction’ team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it,” touts the film’s promo.

Tickets include dinner. Beer available for purchase. To buy tickets in advance or check out a trailer of the movie, go to: www.fortlewis.edu/environmentalcenter. Tickets can also be pre-purchased at Maria’s Bookshop.
