Jazz, classical highlight start of 2015-16 recital series

What:  2015-16 Unitarian Recital Series
When: Fridays at 7 p.m., Sept. 25, Nov. 20, Feb. 12 & April 15
Where: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 419 San Juan Drive
Tickets: $20 adults, $8 children and students. Season passes available.

Fall is in the air, which means it’s time for the Unitarian Universality Fellowship of Durango to kick off another recital season. This series features FLC Music Department faculty, string players from New Mexico, and Marilyn Garst, music director and pianist at the fellowship. The series kicks off this Fri., Sept. 25, with husband and wife duo, Mark Walters (clarinet) and Lisa Campi Walters (piano), performing classical and jazz, including Brahm’s 1894 “Sonata in E-flat Major,” the last piece of chamber music Brahms wrote before his death in 1897. Full of drama and brooding passion, the piece is said to explore all of the technical and color possibilities of combining piano and clarinet. Other pieces in the program include a piano suite by Ravel as well as an arrangement of Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók. The concert will also feature a new piece written by Campi Walters, “The Ability to Swim,” which premiered in Jinan, China.

The program will close with several works by George Gershwin from the “Tin Pan Alley” jazz era of the early 20th century as well as pieces from Miles’ Davis’ influential 19659 album, “Kind of Blue.”

As a professor of music at Fort Lewis College, Walters serves as director of bands and teaches woodwinds, music education, blues, jazz and rock. He formed and is conductor of the Southwest Civic Winds, a Four Corners-based concert band.  Campi Walters is an associate professor of piano at the college where she also teaches theory and performs solo and chamber music. She is pianist for the Red Shoe Trio. Both are also members of the San Juan Symphony.

The upcoming concerts in the series will feature:

- Nov. 20, M. Brent Williams, violin, and Marilyn Garst, piano, present works by Mozart, Stravinsky and Brahms. Williams is an assistant professor of violin and viola at FLC and concertmaster of the San Juan Symphony and the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Georgia.

- Feb. 12, 2016, John O’Neal performs music for keyboard percussion. He joined the FLC music faculty in 2014 and teaches percussion and jazz.

- April 15, 2016, Kay Newnam, concertmaster and violin soloist of the Orchestra of Santa Fe and  member of the San Juan Symphony, and  Joanna de Keyser, cellist and professor at the University of New Mexico, perform masterworks from Haydn, Copland and Dvo?ák.
