Powerhouse reboots with MakerLab partnership

What: Powerhouse Re-Opening Celebration
When: Sat., Sept. 19, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Powerhouse Science Center

After a few months of recircuiting itself, the Powerhouse Science Center 2.0 will be booting up this Saturday, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

To celebrate, a day of activities and entertainment is planned at the Powerhouse, including live music, science demos and tours. The day is also a chance to introduce the community to the Powerhouse’s new partner, Durango MakerLab.

“We are super excited to announce that the Powerhouse Science Center and Durango MakerLab are collaborating to bring Durango and the Four Corners region new innovative, STEM-based, experiential programming geared toward all-ages,” stated a press release from the Powerhouse’s Board of Directors.

According to the release, the Powerhouse will be teaming up with MakerLabs to offer maker-themed activities, including exhibits and after-school programs. “Program curriculum … will provide kids with active and authentic learning experiences through problem-solving and inquiry,” stated the release. “Maker education is a way for kids to stretch their limits and help them understand what they are capable of.”

In addition, the Powerhouse will continue to provide field trips to grades k-5 from 9-R, Bayfield and Ignacio school districts through the BP-funded Southwest Science Collaboration.

According to its website, Durango MakerLabs, formerly known as Durango Maker Club, is “a small group of makers, inventors, artists, craftsmen and educators in Southwest Colorado geared toward establishing a permanent maker space to facilitate collaboration and to provide the resources needed to inspire innovation and promote STEAM based-education.”

The nonprofit organization works with Durango School District 9-R and held a series of stem-based camps this summer at Durango High School.

Starting Sun., Sept. 20, the Powerhouse will be open Friday – Sunday, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Entrance is $6 for children, $7.50 for adults and free for members.

Upcoming events include a “Makerspace Barn Raising,” on Mon., Sept. 21, starting at 5:15 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help build furniture, create wish lists, install equipment and further design and plan the space. Free pizza, beverages, Makerspace perks and “warm fuzzies” will be provided. An additional “barn raising” will be held Mon., Oct. 5, also at 5:15 p.m., followed by “Steve Jobs Day” on Wed., Oct. 14.
