Hardcore runners and weekend warriors alike can do double duty this weekend, enjoying the peak of fall colors while helping out the Women’s Resource Center.

Oct. 10-11 marks the return of the popular Durango Double, featuring trail (Saturday) and road (Sunday) half marathons. New this year, the Double will be partnering with the Gena Rych Memorial 5K Run/Walk for those looking for a more leisurely pace.

This will be the second year for the Gena Rych 5k, which honors Rych, 27, a former employee of Alpine Bank who was killed in a small plane crash outside Silverton in 2011. She died along with three other coworkers, all en route to a holiday party in Aspen.

According to Theresa Blake, a friend of Gena’s who helped found the Gena Rych Memorial Fund, Gena loved running and the outdoors. She also put herself through college, and the run is meant to celebrate her life and spirit. All proceeds from this weekend’s races, as well as the memorial fund, go to the WRC – a nonprofit advocating empowerment and self-sufficiency of women and girls in La Plata County – to provide young women with educational opportunities.

And perhaps best of all, entry into the Double includes free admission into Durango’s Oktoberfest celebration, held Saturday and Sunday in Buckley Park. In addition, there will be post-race festivities by the Animas River, including free kids activities, awards and prizes.

The Durango Double is presented by Animas Surgical Hospital and Ska Brewing. To sign up for the double or 5k, go to: https://runsignup.com/dd.
