Film explores world’s ancient healing traditions

What: “Talking Story: One Woman’s Quest to Preserve Ancient Spiritual and Healing Traditions,” documentary and fund-raiser for Karma Bhotia Foundation and Nepal earthquake victims
When: Fri., May 8, at 7 p.m. & Sat., May 9, at 4 p.m.
Where: Inhabit, 1970 E. 3rd Ave.

Go on an amazing journey as author and filmmaker Marie-Rose Phan-Lê travels the farthest reaches of the world in search of ancient healing traditions. The film, “Talking Story: One Woman’s Quest to Preserve Ancient Spiritual and Healing Traditions,” will have two local viewings this weekend, Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, at Inhabit, 1970 E. 3rd Ave. Proceeds from the showing will go to the locally based Karma Bhotia Foundation to help victims of Nepal’s recent earthquake.
Phan-Lê’s award-winning documentary explores some of the richest spiritual traditions in the world, including different forms of shamanism, spirit-channeling, plant medicine and divination. Viewers are given an intimate look into ancient cultural practices in Peru, Hawaii, Nepal, India and China, as well as Phan-Lê’s own Vietnam.

Phan-Lê was moved by the knowledge that sacred traditions all over the world are disappearing with the passing of community elders. She made the film in hopes of documenting some of this ancient wisdom before it dies out. Born a child of the Vietnam War, the film is also a journey within, as Phan-Lê re-evaluates her life’s purpose and strives to become a healer herself.

Of “Talking Story,” National Geographic explorer and filmmaker Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey said, “Talking Story is the extraordinary journey of an unwitting heroine, whose adventure is a testament that the greatest exploration we will ever make is traversing our inner landscape. Such an expedition requires unflinching surrender and a courageous heart.”

The film shows at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday. Entrance is $11, which will go to the Karma Bhotia Foundation. To see a trailer: talkingstorymovie.com/trailer.html
