Tickling the ivories at the Ragtime Fest

What: Durango Ragtime and Early Jazz Festival
When: Fri. - Sun., March 20 - 22
Where: Strater Hotel – Henry Strater Theater and Pullman Room

Step back in time as the Durango Ragtime Fest returns for its third year this weekend at the Strater Hotel. For three days, March 20-22, the historic hotel will be filled with early jazz music, silent movies, after-hours parties, mingling and much more.
Adam Swanson, a recent graduate of Fort Lewis College in classical piano, heads up the festival. Currently a student at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Swanson, 23, is already making a name for himself as one of the world’s foremost performers and historians of ragtime and early American music. A featured performer and lecturer at ragtime and jazz festivals across the United States, he is the youngest three-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and made his debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 19.
Other performers include Nashville recording artist Danny Coots and world-renowned jazz and ragtime pianist Fredrick Hodges.
Festivities kick off Friday morning at 10 a.m. with the “Fred Astaire in Ragtime” symposium. Although best remembered for his musical films of the 1930-70s, Astaire’s stage career actually began in 1906 as a singer, dancer and pianist, during the Ragtime heyday. This seminar will illuminate this fascinating part of Astaire’s early career.
Later in the day, the festival’s opening concert, “Boogie and Blues” gets things shaking at 3 p.m. in the Henry Strater Theater, followed by live music throughout the evening. The next day begins at 10 a.m. with “Emmett Miller: Minstrel Man from Georgia,” a symposium with Swanson. Then, travel back to the roaring 20s with “Safety First!” a feature length silent movie at 1 p.m., followed by more live music. Festivities close out with a farewell brunch Sunday morning at the Diamond Belle.
