A weekend celebrating diversity in the 4 Corners

What: 6th Annual Four Corners Pride Festival
When: Through June 25
Where: All around Durango

June was officially declared LGBT pride month by the White House this May, and what better way to celebrate than the annual Four Corners Pride Festival. The event brings together members of the local LGBT community as well as straight allies.

Put on by the Four Corners Alliance for Diversity (previously known as 4cGLAD), the 2015 Pride Festival includes films, cocktail parties, concerts and the Animas River parade. Highlights include:

- Thurs., June 25, 5 p.m., Cocktail Reception, Rochester Hotel’s Secret Garden

- Fri., June 26, 9 p.m., Dance Party, Animas City Theatre

- Sat., June 27, 11 a.m. Float Parade on the Animas, E. 33rd Street to Rotary Park followed by After Party-Party, 5 p.m., 6512’ Restaurant

? Sun., June 28, 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., Worship Services at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church; and 10 a.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango.

Four Corners Pride Festival Organizing Chair and Four Corners Alliance for Diversity Board Chair Barbara Balaguer believes that the celebration is important to raise awareness and understanding of rural LGBT identities.

“We have come to recognize the very basic human need we all share in our wish to live authentically and to feel safe in the communities in which we live and work,” she said. “The annual Pride Festival helps to raise awareness about issues of shared relevance to the LGBT community and the community-at-large.”

This year’s festival is sponsored by the Leland House and the Rochester Hotel. For a complete schedule of Pride events or more information, visit www.4cPride.org or call 385-7202.
