It’s a cirque du James Joyce as local performance artists present “In Bloom – James Joyce’s Circus of the Mind,” based on Joyce’s classic novel Ulysses. Directed by Aaron Beck, this original stage adaptation takes “Circe” – perhaps the most surreal and controversial chapter of Joyce’s novel – and turns it into a “mesmerizing spectacle of color and sound.”

This odyssey of the mind and feast for the sense lights up the Arts Center stage Thursday through Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Banned for decades with more than 500 copies burned by the U.S. Postal Service, the book centers around Leopold Bloom in 1904 Dublin. In the witching hours of night, we follow as Bloom (neither a “Real Irishman” nor a “Real Jew”) stumbles through Dublin’s Red Light District from one hallucinogenic dreamscape to another as he searches for young Stephen Dedalus.

The show features music by “The Black Boatmen,” who blend Irish ballads with high-energy klezmer tunes as well as dancers performing everything from aerials to burlesque, jigs and reels.

Beck also directed “Elixir,” a production of the Salt Fire Circus, where he served as artistic director in 2010-11 and is still a member. He has also collaborated with acclaimed performance duo “The Mob” in Denmark and is a member of the National Pastime Theater of Chicago.
