5K in memory of Stan, fighting Alzheimer’s

What: Stan the Marathon Man’s 5K
When:  9 a.m. Sat., Aug. 15
Where: Santa Rita Park

Athletes around the country are banding together to help bring an end to Alzheimer’s disease, and this weekend Durango will have a chance to step up as well.

Stan “Marathon Man” Rabbe

The “Stan the Marathon Man’s 5K” run/walk takes place Sat., Aug. 15 at Santa Rita Park. The event is being put on by Athletes to End Alzheimer’s and benefits the Alzheimer’s Association Durango and the Fort Lewis College Foundation.

The fundraiser is in honor of local “Stan the Marathon Man,” also known as Stanley Ray Rabbe, who worked at Miller Middle School as a math teacher and basketball coach, and at Durango High as a guidance counselor. Stan ran 45 marathons in his life and was closely involved with the cycling community in Durango. In January, he died at the age of 65 of complications from Alzheimer’s.

Athletes to End Alzheimer’s was started by the Alzheimer’s Association in New York City to give endurance athletes the opportunity to participate in events they love while working to end Alzheimer’s, the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.

Saturday’s course starts at Santa Rita Park, heads south on the Animas River Trail and doubles back to finish at the park. The race kicks off at 9 a.m., and brunch will follow at 9:30 a.m. After the race, there will be a party featuring local vendors, a DJ, balloon animals, prizes and a silent auction. Information about Alzheimer’s disease and facility and caregiver options also will be available.

The first 125 to cross the finish line will receive medals in addition to the prize awarded to the first male and female finishers. All pre-registered participants will also get T-shirts.

To preregister, go to: imathlete.com.
