Traipse back to Tudor England with ‘Wearing Through’

What: 20 Moons presents “Wearing Through”
When:  Fri. and Sat., April 17-18 & 24-25, 5:30 and 8 p.m. (no show 5:30 p.m. Sat., April 18)
Where: McPherson Chapel at Fort Lewis College

Travel back in time to the Renaissance period as contemporary dance company 20 Moons, in collaboration with Suzy DiSanto, presents “Wearing Through,” an interpretation of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives intertwined with those of seven modern-day women.

The performance will run for two weekends, opening this Fri., April 17, at 5:30 p.m. at Fort Lewis College’s McPherson Chapel.

This will be the fourth project for 20 Moons co-directors Jessica Perino and Anne Bartlett, whose mission is to “create performances that shake up our perception of reality.”

According to Perino, the movements and motifs throughout the production explore the “theme of survival in the context of a moment, a lifetime, the span of generations and human existence.”

The idea behind the performance came from DiSanto, who first conceptualized it 25 years ago while in college. “My interest in Henry the VIII began sophomore year in college when my professor walked into class the first day and said, ‘Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived. The History of the Reformation,’” recalls DiSanto. “I changed my degree to history immediately.”

A few years later, while she was in graduate school in California earning her masters degree in dance history, DiSanto choreographed a dance to fit the storyline that would eventually become “Wearing Through.”

Fast forward to 2014 in Durango. After seeing the ladies from 20 Moons perform, DiSanto decided she’d found the ideal team to bring the project to life.

“They loved the idea because they also work from improvisation,” says DiSanto.

Another key player in the production is local visual artist Minna Jain, who designed the show’s wearable-art sculptures, Tudor-era dresses with each part of the dress showcasing the corresponding body part. For instance, ribs are added to the corset and eyeballs to the hats to emphasize the “inner experience with external form.”

While graphic, DiSanto insists the costumes are “gorgeous and must be viewed up close.”

Live music performed by Jeroen VanTyne adds the final piece with his soundscape of new arrangements of compositions by Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny and others.

For DiSanto, it is a relief and joy to finally see the concept that has been in her head all these years played out on stage.

“It wasn’t until Sunday that we put every part together – the music, dancing, costumes – and it was total kismet,” says an excited DiSanto.

Tickets are $12-$18 and available at www.wear ingthrough.brownpapertickets.com, or at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

Documentary investigates 1906 gunfight

What: “Tragedy at El Moro” screening
When: 6 p.m., Tues., April 21
Where: El Moro Tavern, 945 Main Ave.

The Wild West comes alive next Tuesday as El Moro Spirits & Tavern premieres a documentary that delves into the history behind one of Durango’s most storied gunfights. Produced by the locally based Fastforward Media, “Tragedy at El Moro,” retells the story of the 1906 shooting death of Sheriff William J. Thompson at the hands of acting Town Marshall Jessie C. Stansel.

The 45-minute film, which was directed by Preston Benson, is set in the once-burgeoning railroad town of Durango, where animosity has been brewing between two factions over the issue of gambling. Narrated by cowboy poet “Dirty” Don Hinkley, the film tells the story of how the two lawmen became bitter enemies and follows the intrigue and controversy of the trial.

The film features renowned local historian Duane Smith as well as Sharon Greve, a historian for the Durango Police Department. Other contributors include the Animas Museum and History Alive Durango, a local Victorian society.

The new El Moro sits at the same address as the old El Moro Saloon, which existed more than 100 years ago and is a key location in the telling of the tragic shootout.

Things get under way at 6 p.m. and seating is limited. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 the day of and includes a free beer or cocktail and appetizers. Tickets can be bought at El Moro Spirits & Tavern, 945 Main Ave.
