FLC Cycling hosts ‘Bikes and Bands Bash’

What: Bikes and Bands Bash
Where: Sat., Sept. 27, all day
When: Fort Lewis College, Center of Southwest Studies/Community Concert Hall plaza

Join the Durango Daybreak Rotary and Fort Lewis College Cycling Team as they bring a new, “visionary event promoting cycling and doing good in the community” to Fort Lewis College this Saturday. Held in conjunction with the Fall Blaze, the event features a full day of bike-related activities and races for all ages.
The Bash is a fundraiser for the FLC Cycling Team, DEVO, Trails 2000 and Durango Daybreak Rotary.

The action gets rolling at 8 a.m. for the annual Fall Blaze road tour, which raises funds for the FLC Cycling Scholarship Fund. The tour is followed by a full slate of activities including the opening of the Vintage Bike Show and FLC Cycling Exhibit, which takes place at the Center of Southwest Studies starting at 10:30 a.m.
In addition, there will be a “Huffy Toss/Ghost Ride,” Devo/FLC Team Relay, cyclocross races for kids and adults, as well as a team relay, in which costumes are encouraged. FLC Cycling will also be hosting its 20th anniversary Celebration and Expo.

Local singer/songwriter Robbie Overfield will take the stage at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Moetones at 1:30 p.m. Papa Otis and the 88’s closes things out starting at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Bash are $10 and available through FLC Cycling, Durango Devo, Trails 2000, or at the door. For a full schedule or more information, go to www.fortlewis.edu/cycling/BikesnBandsBash.aspx

iAM?Music kicks off with benefit concert

What: “Playing for Change,” a benefit for the iAM Music Institute featuring Hello Dollface with special guest Delaney Davis
Where: Henry Strater Theater
When:  Sat., Sept. 27, 8-11 p.m.

A night of music will help introduce locals to Durango’s newest nonprofit organization, the iAM Music Institute. The event, “Playing for Change,” is a double entendre, playing off a global movement of the same name aiming to change the world through music, as well as “change” in a monetary sense.

“We are asking people to bring their spare change and donate directly to our scholarship fund,” iAM’s co-founder and Creative Director Ashley Edwards said.

Edwards is also the lead singer of well-known local band Hello Dollface, which will be headlining the event. New Mexico singer songwriter Delaney Davis will open the show. The evening will wrap up with a special all-star encore featuring members from seven local bands.

According to Edwards, the goal of iAM Music – which she co-founded with bandmate Jesse Ogle – is to provide a progressive, creative approach to music education. In addition, the program seeks to encourage students to be active in social equality, community and environmental causes.

The program reaches out to local students who may not otherwise have access to regular music education, including those as the DeNier Youth Center, Animas High School, Big Picture High and St. Columba, as well as any others wanting to learn music. Funds from Saturday’s show will help fund scholarships for iAMs programs.

“We hope our students become leaders who embody our philosophy of inspiring change, through positive rhythms and actions in the world in which we thrive,” states the iAM mission statement. “In short, the iAM Music Institute aims to share this vision with a global community and strengthen the desire to inspire through music.”

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 day of show. For tickets or more information, go to www.iammusic.us.
