‘70s pop heyday returns with ABBA?Mania

What: ABBA Mania, London ABBA tribute band
When: Tues., Oct. 28, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College

Tickets: $29-$34, available at www.durangoconcerts.com or 970.247.7657
It’s the biggest Swedish export to hit American shores since Ikea, and, well, the original ABBA. ABBA Mania, from London’s West End, is set to recreate the Swedish supergroup right here in Durango, complete with platforms and tight sequined pantsuits, next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. And in case you had to ask, yes, the dance floor will be open for all dancing queens and kings.

Known for its dominance of music charts in the ‘70s and ‘80s, ABBA has sold 370 million records worldwide, ranking the band with Elvis Presley and The Beatles in terms of commercial success. In addition, it has inspired a whole new generation with the Broadway musical and movie “Mamma Mia!” which starred Meryl Streep and was written entirely as a vehicle for ABBA’s music.

ABBA Mania played its first shows in 2000. Today, the production is known as one of the – if not the – most polished and authentic ABBA tributes, playing to sell-out crowds in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. One of ABBA Mania’s crowning achievements was performing in a 2004 television special celebrating ABBA’s 30th anniversary and performing alongside original ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus.

As an added bonus, the Durango Children’s Chorale and Durango Youth Chorus will perform “I Have a Dream” along with the band.
The show won praise in London’s entertainment tabloid, The Stage. “The audience, carried by the ’70s sounds of ‘Voulez-vouz’ and ‘The Winner Takes it All,’ are soon singing and dancing in the aisles. A live backing band and really spectacular stage effects make this a great evening’s entertainment and well worth the money.”
