Dolores River Festival gets the fun flowing

What: 11th annual Dolores River Festival
When: Sat., June 7
Where: Joe Rowell Park Dolores

The upper Dolores River is running high and there’s no better time to celebrate one of the West’s classic rivers than this weekend.

The 11th annual Dolores River Festival returns this Saturday to Joe Rowell Park in downtown Dolores. The fun gets going at 10 a.m. and continues till sundown with kids activities, live music, free raft rides, the Zuke’s river dog contest, costumed river parade, vendors, food and beverages.

Two stages will be presenting live music and dance all day with Denver’s Rowdy Shadehouse band, a high-energy dance funk extravaganza, headlining on the main stage. Other artists include Hopi reggae singer Casper and the Mighty 602 Band; the Jaden Carlson Band; West African Afro-Fusion sounds from Paa Kow and the By All Means Band; Big Momma Donna and her Powerhouse Blues Band; and festival favorite, Yearning for Yeti. The Crested Butte Dance Collective, with its stilt walkers and acrobatics, will also perform.

After hours, the music moves indoors to the Dolores River Brewery, where local favorites Cowboy Sushi play the after-party.

The festival is put on by the Greater Dolores Action as an annual celebration of the Dolores River and the many ways it connects the people to each other, the environment and natural resources. A portion of proceeds from the day’s events will go to river enhancement, restoration and conservation projects.

Admission is $15 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Tent camping is available for $5/person and overnight RV parking is $15/vehicle. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

Tearing it up for Tyler

What: 7th annual "TIU4Tyler" skate comp
When: Sat., June 7, 10 a.m. registration; 11 a.m. competition
Where: Durango Skate Park

Friends and family of Tyler Valencia will one  again be gathering at the Durango Skate Park to honor his memory and raise some money for a local charity. Known as "Tear it up for Tyler," the 7th annual event starts at 10 a.m. Sat., June 7.

Tyler, who was killed in a car accident in the winter of 2006 at the age of 16, was a strong advocate for a new skate park. However, he died mere months before the new park opened. He is survived by his parents, sister and brother, all organizers of the Tear it Up event.

This year's event is sponsored by The Boarding Haus and City of Durango and subsists solely on this support and donations from the community. Since its inception, the comp has grown considerably, with categories in bowl, street and vert. It is open to all ability levels.

The entrance fee is $10 and includes a T-shirt, drinks and prizes. One dollar from every entrance fee will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of La Plata County. For more information or to donate or help, call Tyler's mom, Charlett Warren, at 970-946-7799
