Foundation raises funds for Nepalese school

What: Bhotia Foundation fundraiser and silent auction for Nepali schoolchildren
When: Wed., July 23, 5 - 9 p.m.
Where: Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave.

Join local resident Karma Bhotia as he shares video, images and stories of his home village of Chyamtang, Nepal, located high in the Himalayas next Wednesday at the Open Shutter Gallery.

The event is a fundraiser for the Karma & Jyamu Bhotia Foundation, a local nonprofit that raises money for various charitable projects in Chyamtang. Funds will also be used to help the village’s children, whose school was damaged in a 2012 earthquake. They will also go toward bringing in qualified teachers, expanding the school’s library and providing a daily lunch to students. “Support from you will open the door of opportunity for children in Chyamtang and help them to become the leaders of tomorrow,” read a news release from the Bhotia foundation.

In October, Karma will be returning to Chyamtang for the first time in 25 years, bringing with him a group of volunteers. During their time in Chyamtang, the group will help with several service projects, including helping to repair the school.

Next week’s fundraiser will also feature a silent auction, with bidding closing at 8 p.m., and items are still being accepted for the auction.

For more information on joining the trek, or donating items to the auction or money to the foundation, go to bhotiafoundation.org. Monetary donations are also being accepted at the Himalayan Kitchen, 992 Main Ave.
