Strater goes neon for ‘90s dance party

What: Neon New Year’s Eve Dance Party with Hello Dollface
Where: Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: 9 p.m., Wed., Dec. 31
Tickets: $10 advance; $12 at door

Whether you want to party like it’s 1999, get grungy like Kurt Cobain or vogue it up like Madonna, the Henry Strater Theatre is the place to be to ring in 2015.

The Hank will be hosting New Year’s festivities with music by Hello Dollface, with special guest, Oregon musicians Tim McLaughlin, of Eleven Eyes. The local favorites will play a special mix of ’90s covers, featuring hits by Nirvana, Salt ’n Pepa, Spice Girls, Sublime and more.

Tickets for this all-ages show are $10 advance or $12 at the door and include a free champagne toast (for those 21 and over, of course) and dessert. Special VIP tickets are also available for $20. A portion of proceeds will benefit the iAM Music Institute, a local nonprofit dedicated to furthering music education with a social and environmental conscience.

Arts Center stages timeless musical classic

What: “Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat,” with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Where: Durango Arts center Theatre
When: Sat., Dec. 20, 1 and 7 p.m.

An enduring musical hits the stage for its final run this Saturday, as the Durango Arts Center’s Applause! group presents the 1970s classic “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, Joseph has earned six Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

The rollicking, family-friendly production, directed by Theresa Carson, features more than 60 local children ages 4-18, as well as Landon Newton in the lead role and Liam Hahn as the “rock ’n’ roll” pharaoh. The story, based on the Biblical story of Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, and his coat of many colors, is sung and told by three narrators. An age-old tale of sibling rivalry, the play stresses the themes of love, compassion and forgiveness – a perfect reminder for the holiday season.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for DAC members, students (13+) and seniors; and $10 for students ages 12 and under. For tickets, visit the DAC, 802 E. 2nd Ave., go online to www.DurangoArts.tix.com or call (970) 259-2606, Ext. 19.
