Chorale Society does ‘Traditional Family Christmas’

What:  “A Traditional Family Christmas” concert and after-gala by the Durango Chorale Society
When: 3- 6 p.m., Sun., Dec. 7
Where: Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College

It’s time to get in the holiday spirit as the Durango Choral Society presents “A Traditional Family Christmas,” this Sunday afternoon at the Concert Hall.

The Chorale Society’s four choirs – Durango Choral Society, Durango Children’s Chorale, Durango Women’s Choir and the new Durango Youth Chorus – as well as special guests, the Durango Jazz Combo, will be performing a wide variety of music as well as the ever-popular sing-along. The concert once again will be conducted by guest conductor and Episcopal priest Bob Seney and will feature a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

After the concert, the festivities move next door to Jones Hall for a community Holiday Gala Fundraiser from 4-6 p.m. The gala will feature refreshments, music by Margi Coxwell and a silent auction featuring a wide array of holiday gift ideas.

“We have items for book lovers, wine aficionados, gift certificates and lots of gift baskets,” said gala organizer Jeanne Bandy said. “There is antique glassware, English tea cups, a 3-foot-tall Santa, artwork and pottery.”

Amy Barrett, conductor of the Durango Children’s Chorale and Durango Youth Chorus, said the gala is an important part of the chorale’s fundraising efforts. “It’s a large part of why we can offer as many scholarships to our students as we do. We’re very grateful for the support of our community,” she said

The concert kicks off at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $18 - $20 for adults and $5 for students and children and are available at www.durangocon certs.com, by phone at (970) 247-7657 or at the Welcome Center box office at E. 8th St. and Main Ave.

What: Pet photos with Santa, a fundraiser for the La Plata County Humane Society
When: Sat., Dec. 6
Where: Healthy Hounds & Fat Cats (21738 Hwy 160) and Pet Haus (1444 Main Ave.)

Christmas is going to the dogs with the return of the annual Pet Photos with Santa, a benefit for the La Plata County Humane Society. Every year the Humane Society has Santa take his picture with all of the good dogs, cats and other little critters as a way to help other animals who may be less fortunate.

Pet owners will have two chances to get Fido spiffed up and in the holiday spirit this Saturday, with Santa making appearance at the Healthy Hounds and Fat Cats from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and the Pet Haus from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Pictures will be taken by “The Fetching Image Pet Photography,” which will be donating their services. All proceeds benefit the homeless animals of La Plata County.
