Getting down with Lake Street Dive at the Smiley

What: Lake Street Dive concert, presented by KSUT
When: Sat., Aug. 16, gates open at 6 p.m.; show at 7 p.m.
Where: Smiley Building lawn, 1309 E. 3rd Ave., rain or shine

The Beatles and Motown are having a love baby on the Smiley Building lawn this Saturday as Boston-based Lake Street Dive brings its uniquely catchy jazz/soul/pop sound to Durango.

Sponsored by KSUT, gates for the show open at 6 p.m. with opening band, the Brothers Comatose, taking the stage at 7 p.m.

Taking its name from a seedy bar district in guitar/trumpet player Mike Olsons' hometown of Minneapolis, Lake Street Dive has been performing for nearly a decade after meeting at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Consisting of lead singer Rachael Price, upright bassist Bridget Kearney, drummer Mike Calabrese and the multi-talented Olson, the quartet describes its music as pop with elements of jazz, swing and soul. “We want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party together,” said Calabrese.

The band hit the big time with an impromptu street corner rendition of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back" that quickly went viral, garnering 1 million hits and counting. The ensuing “Fun Machine” EP included a studio version of that track, plus covers of George Michaels’ “Faith,” Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl” and Wings’ “Let Me Roll It,” among others.

Today, LSD now finds itself poised on the cusp of stardom, thanks to recent appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Colbert Report." Four Corners audiences may remember them from performances at the 2012 Pagosa Folk’n Bluegrass Festival or 2013 Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

This spring, the band released its third recording, the full-length “Bad Self Portraits,” which features radio-friendly tracks like “You Go Down Smooth,” “Bobby Tanqueray” and the title track.

Opening the concert is The Brothers Comatose, a Bay Area quintet that blends Americana, folk and bluegrass into a high-energy, old-time sound. The Brothers have toured with Yonder Mountain String Band and The Devil Makes Three.

Food from Rick’s Chicks, beer from BREW Pub & Kitchen, wines from Guy Drew Vineyards and a signature KSUT summer cocktail will be available for purchase.

Tickets for the show cost $20 in advance at www.ksut.org and Animas Trading Co. or $25 the day of the show. In addition, a limited number of tickets for a pre-show party from 5-7 p.m. at the Rochester Hotel are available for $25 each. Pre-party tickets include two beverages, appetizers and a special VIP performance by the Brothers Comatose but do not include entrance to the Lake Street Dive show.
