It’s fiddling for a good cause Friday night, as Durango Nature Studies presents its sixth annual Bluegrass Festival fundraiser on the lawn at Rotary Park.

The evening features a full slate of local pickers, kicking off with The Slackers at 5:30 p.m. This informal group of musician/friends have been getting together for years in one another’s living rooms and, occasionally, at a party, family gathering or benefit. Members playing Friday night include: Joe Lewandowski (guitar), Sue Coulter (mandolin), Hugh Felt (banjo) and Michael Schultz (bass).

At 6:45 p.m., La La Bones, a local six-piece bluegrass band, takes the stage. The group is unique on the local scene in that it features the full suite of bluegrass instrumentation (fiddle, dobro, banjo, mandolin, guitar and double bass). Furthermore, vocals are shared by the entire group – three men and three women – which is made up of Tommy Frederico (banjo); Jimi Giles (bass); Kathy Hilimire (fiddle); Deb Moses (dobro); Scott Roberts (mandolin); and Kyle Siesser (guitar.) To check out their music, visit www.reverbnation.com/lalabones

Headliners, the Flume Canyon Boys, come on at 8 p.m. With roots in New Mexico’s Sangre De Cristo mountains playing for a Boy Scout camp in 2011, the band recently relocated to Durango. With their first album, “100 Miles,” under its belt, the band is working on establishing itself in the local community. Playing original and old time bluegrass, the band features: Joshua Standard (guitar, lead vocals); Timmy Borden (bass, vocals); Evan Coombs (banjo); Jeremy Ralstin (guitar, vocals); and Art Woodard (mandolin). To check them out, visit www.facebook.com/TheFlumeCanyonBoys

In between sets, the Tweeners, featuring DNS’ own Sally Shuffield, will keep crowds entertained. Shuffield, who was a touring songwriter in another life and has three CDs to her credit, will bring her bluegrass stylings as well as some traditional tunes. To hear more, visit www.sallyshuffield.com.

Beer, root beer, burgers and brats will be available for purchase. Proceeds go to fund the DNS nature center as well as educational programs and scholarships.
