Vanilla Pop haunts historic Strater stage

What: Halloween Bash with Vanilla Pop
Where: Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Thurs., Oct. 31 from 8-11:30 p.m.

Bust out your best ’80s garb and dancing shoes, as local party favorite Vanilla Pop makes its public debut at the Historic Strater Theatre. The duo brings it line up of favorite hits, old and new, to the Strater's Halloween Bash from 8-11:30 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 31.

Made up of lead singer "Al Dente" and keyboardist/vocalist and self-proclaimed "best bass player in the world "Lester Moore," Vanilla Pop has been charming audiences with its energetic, larger-than-life lounge act for more than 10 years. Based out of Taos, Vanilla Pop is one of the most popular event and party bands throughout the Southwest, sure to get even the most dedicated wall flowers up and shaking a leg. With only a hint of satire, Vanilla Pop has an extensive and well-loved song list that covers everyone from Prince to Queen (just no "Mustang Sally" or "Brown-Eyed Girl." Seriously. Don't even ask.)

Doors open at 8 p.m., music starts at 8:30 p.m. and festivities wrap up at 11:30 p.m. For additional information, call 247-4431 or visit henrystratertheatre.com.

San Juan Mountains make it to the silver screen

What: “Chasing Ice” screening
Where: Fort Lewis College, Noble Hall
When: Sat., Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.

The San Juans hit the big screen with “Chasing Ice,” a firsthand look at the world's changing climate, at 7 p.m. Sat., Nov. 2, in Fort Lewis College's Noble Hall.

The documentary follows what is known as the "Extreme Ice Survey," a multi-year time-lapse of the Arctic's melting glaciers.

The idea for the survey came about in 2005, when acclaimed photographer James Balog was sent to Iceland on assignment for National Geographic. A self-proclaimed skeptic on climate change, that trip opened Balog's eyes to what he saw as the biggest story in human history and sparked the idea for the survey and resulting movie.

"Chasing Ice" follows Balog, along with his band of young adventurers, as they deploy untested technology and come face to face with their own mortality in brutal sub-zero temperatures – all in an effort to provide photographic proof to the world of how dire the situation is. His haunting images compress years into seconds, capturing ancient mountains of ice as they disappear in a geologic blink of an eye. "Chasing Ice" depicts not only a photographer trying to deliver evidence but also tries to send a message of hope to our carbon-powered planet.

In addition to the arctic footage, the film also features footage from Red Mountain Pass, where cameras snapped hourly shots of the snow pack and melt each year.

The film has won accolades and awards worldwide since being released last year, including one for "Best Cinematography" at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. According to Robert Redford, "You’ve never seen images like this before … it deserves to be seen and felt on the big screen."

All proceeds from the event benefit the Center for Snow & Avalanche Studies. For more information, call 387-5080 or visit www.snowstudies.org.
