Start the holiday season with Handel’s most popular sounds

What:  San Juan Symphony
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Sun., Nov. 24 at 3 p.m.

Start the holiday season with the sounds of the San Juan Symphony and two extraordinary vocal soloists at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
The Durango Choral Society, Farmington’s Vicus Voces and the symphony get the season underway with their first performance of Handel’s cherished oratorio. The popularity and familiarity of Handel’s “The Messiah,” particularly the famed Hallelujah chorus, is instantly recognizable from the vast numbers of movies and commercials it has been featured in.
There is no doubt the work has the widest popular appeak in the entire choral repertoire. Several of the most popular numbers from this masterpiece were selected for the show, creating a 90-minute concert that will lift the spirit.
Gemma Kavanagh, soprano, and Laura Thoreson, mezzosoprano, join the choral society, directed by Linda Mack Berven, and the voces, directed by Virginia Nickels-Hircock, to bring the favorite arias and choruses from Handel’s The Messiah to life.
