Wine & Music Fest benefits local support group

What:  Alternative Horizons’ Wine & Music Fest

Alternative Horizons presents its 8th annual Wine & Music Fest from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Fri. - Sat., June 28-29, at the Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.

The event, a fund-raiser for the local organization that’s been striving to end domestic violence since 1978, features a silent auction, wine and beer tasting from The Wine Merchant, live jazz by Actual Proof, and hors d’oeuvres from Norton’s Catering.

Alternative Horizons offers free, confidential victim services in both English and Spanish. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide support and alternatives to survivors of domestic violence and their families. They also work to strengthen the community through education and prevention.

Even mutts get their day to strut, and that day is this Fri., June 28, at Durango Mountain Resort for the Mutt ‘n’ Strut Family 5K.

The dog-friendly event, which benefits Annie’s Orphans rescue and pet adoption organization, celebrates every member of the family – both two- and four-legged. The 5K starts at 10 a.m., followed by a demonstration by Eric and Angelyne, the amazing deaf cattle dog, at 11 a.m. Next up is the Family Pet Parade at noon, where costumes are encouraged and prizes awarded.

Schemers and scalawags meet mayhem, mystery and music when the Durango Melodrama returns for another year with “Dirty Deeds at the Depot,” taking the stage at 7:45 p.m. Thurs., June 27, at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

The plot centers on a train station in the small, Western town of San Juan Capistrano, where characters like Lacie Camisole and her long lost childhood sweetheart, Justin Tyme, watch dreams fulfilled and plans dashed to the rocks.
