Tales of epic adventure with Dave Hahn
What: “An Evening with Dave Hahn,” kicking off San Juan Mountains Association’s 25th Anniversary
Where: Smiley Building Theater
When: Sun., Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.
The San Juan Mountains Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary with “An Evening with Dave Hahn” at 6 p.m. Sun., Jan. 27, at the Smiley Building Theater, 1309 E. 3rd Ave.

Hahn, a professional mountain guide, ski patroller, journalist and lecturer, shares stories and photos of his amazing mountain adventures, rescues and narrow escapes on the world’s most challenging peaks. He’s reached the summit of Mt. Everest 14 times, the most for a non-Sherpa climber, and was a member of the team that discovered the remains of George Mallory at 27,000 feet on Everest’s North Face.

Other accomplishments include getting to the summit of Denali 20 times, and recently Vinson Massif, Antarctica’s highest mountain, 27 times. Hahn’s been awarded the Citizen’s Award for Bravery from the Department of the Interior and the Denali Pro Mountaineer of the Year commendation from the National Park Service for rescues performed on Denali.

Food and beverages are provided by Steamworks Brewing, and attendees also get a chance to meet Hahn at a pre-party event from 4-5:30 p.m. For additional information about the event, visit www.sjma.org.

http://www.mstband.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/MST-2012-07-16-%C2%A9Tobin-Voggesser_-7.jpgWhat: Meet the Author with Bill Hatcher
Where: Maria’s Bookshop
When: Mon., Jan. 28 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Adventures come to life at a Meet the Author event featuring a joint book signing with Bill Hatcher, author of The Marble Room, and John Gentry, author of Becoming Ordinary, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mon., Jan. 28, at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

The two will discuss their personal travel and service experiences in East Africa and how these adventures informed their spiritual growth and respective memoirs.

The Marble Room follows Hatcher at a crossroads in his life. Brought up in an evangelical household in the Bible Belt, he had not seen religion provide any answers to his parents’ broken marriage, or, indeed, his own divorce. The key to salvation would come from a most unlikely source: a flyer calling for Peace Corps Volunteers. The book is both a tale of adventure and self-discovery, and proof that even the most naïve and insular American can achieve a spiritual awakening.

Becoming Ordinary features Gentry as a classic “self-made man,” who traveled from the projects to the penthouse. However, despite his outward success, Gentry knew he stood at a crossroads. The call of his soul could no longer be ignored. The story follows him through one year of his journey in Somalia, Africa distributing food to refugees as a volunteer with C.A.R.E.
