Diavolo dances into a new day at Concert Hall
What: Diavolo Dance Theater
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Tues., Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.

The new age of dance theater comes to Durango with Jacques Heim, artistic director, and the unique, modern, acrobatic dance of the Diavolo Dance Theater at 7 p.m., Tues., Jan. 22, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

An internationally renowned dance company, Diavolo “reinvents dance, re-imagines theater and redefines thrills.” The troupe has earned a reputation for stunning, innovative movement on oversized, surrealistic sets and everyday structures, and made precisely coordinated feats look improvisational, even reckless. Working together, the Diavolo dancers explore the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggles to maintain humanity.

Founded in 1992 by Heim, the troupe has an extensive performance history throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Diavolo will perform two pieces: “Trajectoire,” described as a visceral and emotional journey through the ebb and flow of the human experience; and “Transit Space,” inspired by the movement of skateboarding and exploring themes of feeling lost, finding a sense of purpose and coming together.

Where: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
When: Fri., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
Percussionist Jonathan Latta performs at 7 p.m. Fri., Jan. 18,  at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.

The show marks the third presentation in the 2012-13 Recital Series. Latta performs the Suite in G Major by Johann Sebastian Bach with the five-octave marimba, and the centerpiece is the three-movement work by Robert Maggio, Songs from the Wood.

Maggio’s piece plays with singing and marimba styles, interpreting what would happen if the marimba were to “sing.”

Kevin Bobo’s Echoes and Robert McClure’s Prelude 1 are also part of the show. Latta, an assistant professor of music at Fort Lewis College, has also performed with the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra, the San Juan Symphony, the North State Symphony, the Long Bay Symphony, the Tar River Symphony and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra.

For additional information about the event, call 385-8668.
