Laugh it up at the Hank’s Comedy Nights
What: Comedy Nights
Where: Henry Strater Theatre
When: Sat., Jan. 12 at 8 p.m.
Laughter returns to the local stage with the 2013 Comedy Nights series, which starts at 8 p.m. Sat., Jan. 12, at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

After spending the past 15 years entertaining audiences with his sharp, social commentary and unique outlook, Steve Gastineau brings his merriment to Durango. His perception of the ordinary that makes him ask, “What’s the deal?” has also made him a favorite at clubs and colleges from Key West to Anchorage.

The show also features Stephanie McHugh, a regular at the prestigious Comedy Works and a finalist on Season 3 of Nick at Nite’s “Funniest Mom” contest. Her winnings continue as a finalist in the Laugh Across America Contest and the top spot in the Summer Comedy Contest at Wit’s End Comedy Club in her hometown of Westminster.

Comedy returns to the Strater on Feb. 16 with Eugene Kenny and John Crist; March 16 with Lori Callahan and Rick Bryan; and April 6 with Wayne Francis and Will White. For additional information call 375-7123 or visit www.henrystatertheatre.com.

Next generation of bluegrass plays the Abbey
http://www.mstband.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/MST-2012-07-16-%C2%A9Tobin-Voggesser_-7.jpgWhat: Mountain Standard Time
Where: The Abbey Theatre
When: Fri., Jan. 11 at 9 p.m.
After a brief hiatus, Mountain Standard Time is back on stage with the next generation of bluegrass at 9 p.m. Fri., Jan. 11, at the Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College Drive.

With new members on both bass and keyboard, the band has found a revival with a new approach to their distinctly Front Range take on bluegrass. Their sound is anything but traditional, following in the footsteps of such Colorado greats as The String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon. While leading acoustically with guitar and mandolin, they brand their own style, boasting a big, full-band sound with keyboards, electric bass, drums and electronic effects.

Mountain Standard Time hails from all over the country, but when their musical paths crossed in the small mountain burg of Nederland, it was bluegrass magic. Whether fate or coincidence, music-lovers everywhere have been enjoying the “bluegrass fusion” that these five friends and musicians created.

The band performed all over Colorado and the country, with appearances at Wakarusa Music Festival, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Summer Camp Music Festival, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, among others.
