Ska hosts benefit for Natanya Joy Mallin
What:  Fund-raiser for Natanya Joy Mallin
Where: Ska Brewing, Bodo Park
When: Sun., Aug 18, 3-7 p.m.

Durango will once again be stepping in to help a friend in need. This Sun., Aug. 18, a community fund raiser will take place for Durango native and fort Lewis College graduate Natanya Joy Mallin at Ska Brewing from 3-7 p.m. There will be live music by The Assortment as well as a silent auction.

Mallin is currently battling stage IV sarcoma with radiation and chemotherapy treatments in Denver. But that wasn’t the beginning of her medical emergencies, which started with a car accident seven years ago in which she lost part of her right lung. Then, last September, Mallin, who was about to begin a new career as a hair stylist, was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening complications from that surgery. She eventually lost her lung, and almost her life, but rallied back. However, in March, she  was hit with another bombshell when she found painful swells on her back and later learned they were not due to surgery but instead a rare form of soft-tissue cancer.

Seven surgeries, countless scans and x-rays, three rounds of chemo and one round of radiation later, Mallin is physically and financially exhausted. However, her ordeal has not managed to bring her down. According to family and friends, Natanya has managed to keep a positive attitude.

“Throughout her journey of health care and treatment, Natanya has managed to keep looking on the bright side of life,” said Melinda Jameson, mother of Natanya’s boyfriend, Ryan. “Her near death experiences have brought about a deep wisdom of not fearing death, pain or any of the treatments she still has to endure. She has always been a shining light to her circle of friends and relatives.”

Now that light is shining back upon her, from the communities of Durango, Denver and Evergreen, where she now lives. Sunday’s fundraiser is meant to help her tackle the financial burdens so she can focus on her fight against cancer.

“Natanya Joy is a survivor,” wrote Melinda. “She feels so much better and believes she will be cured.

To donate an item for the auction, contact Melissa Meyer at 759-1892. For those looking to make any donations, visit www.gofundme/NatanaJoyFund.

Author gives ‘food fight’ new meaning
What:  Meet the Author with Wenonah Hauter
Where: Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
When: Tues., Aug. 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Wenonah Hauter takes a bite out of the battle with her book Foodopoly: The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America, and is signing copies during a Meet the Author Event from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tues., Aug. 20, at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

In Foodopoly, Hauter aims at what she considers the real culprit in the country’s food crisis: a handful of large corporations controlling food production. This limits the choices at the grocery store and prevents farmers from raising healthy crops.

Her story blends history, reporting and an understanding of farming and food production in the United State. As the executive director of Food & Water Watch, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainably produced, and the daughter of a Virginia farmer, Hauter’s been involved in the world of farming and food production for years.

For more information about the event, co-sponsored by Durango Natural Foods Co-op, visit www.mariasbookshop.com or call 247-1438.
