Anderson, Gummersall close Concert Hall season
What: John Anderson and Tyller Gummersall
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Wed., May 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The 2012-13 performing arts series finishes out with a performance from John Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Wed., May 1, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

The neo-honky tonker is said to constantly delight and surprise without betraying his musical roots. He grew up listening to rock & roll, but then discovered country legend Merle Haggard. At 17, Anderson moved to Nashville where he helped build the Grand Ole Opry with artists like Emmylou Harris, re-establishing the primacy of pure country music.

Over the years he’s racked up several No. 1 hits, including “Wild and Blue” and “Money in the Bank,” as well as several CMA and ACM awards.
Bayfield native and singer/songwriter Tyller Gummersall opens the show. He began his career at age 8 performing Hank William’s “Hey Good Lookin’” at the La Plata County Fair talent contest. That same year Gummersall began working with two-time national flat pick champ Gary Cook of the Bar D Wranglers. These days, Gummersall divides his time between Nashville, Texas and Colorado. His latest album is “The Makings of a Man.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For additional information, visit www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.

Fort Lewis College graduates take center stage

What: Fort Lewis College Commencement
Where: Whalen Gym
When: Sat., April 27 at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
The Fort Lewis College graduates transition from one journey to the next with the FLC Spring Commencement ceremonies at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sat., April 27, at Whalen Gym.

More than 400 Skyhawk seniors will receive their degrees in front of family and friends. Two ceremonies are planned to accommodate everyone, the first at 8:30 a.m. and the second following at 11:30 a.m.

This year’s commencement speaker is Ann Rhoades, who built a successful career as a vice president of the People Department at Southwest Airlines and starting a human resources consulting firm, People Ink.

Rhoades studied business at the College of Santa Fe and earned an MBA at the University of New Mexico. She began her career at MBank in Dallas. In the late 1980s, her industry changed from finance to flight. As a VP with Southwest Airlines, her job was to hire, train and retain the best quality employees.

Her work continued at the Promus Hotel Corp. and JetBlue Airways before she decided to become her own boss. In 1999, she started People Ink, a firm that helps companies build employee cultures that attract quality people across a wide range of industries.
