Major Leaguer descends on Durango
What: Former MLB slugger Darryl Strawberry visits
Where: Fort Lewis College and Alpine Bank Youth Sports Complex

Major League icon Darryl Strawberry comes to Durango this weekend to speak at Fort Lewis College and help dedicate the fields at the Alpine Bank Youth Sports Complex.

A former drug abuser turned born-again Christian, Strawberry speaks at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at FLC’s Whalen Gymnasium about his turbulent career as well as his life on and off the field. He’ll also be at the sports complex Little League baseball fields for a dedication ceremony from 9-10 a.m. Sat., April 20.

Strawberry began his major league career with the New York Mets in 1983, and ended it with the New York Yankees in 1999. He is best known for his commanding performance at the plate, collecting 335 career home runs and 1,000 RBI. He’s also one of only five Major League players to hit two pinch-hit grand slams in the same season.

He now lives in St. Charles County, Mo., with his wife, Tracy. The two founded The Darryl Strawberry Foundation, an organization dedicated to children with autism.

Singer and songwriter Aaron Watson brings the best of the Texas honky-tonk tradition to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 7:30 p.m. Wed., April 24.

Raised in Amarillo to the sounds of George Jones, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, as well as the Beach Boys and the Beatles, Watson plays country music with a traditional feel and a young man’s energy and spunk. He says he draws his inspiration from a steadfast dedication to both family and fans. His latest release, “Real Good Time,” includes songs about his wife, parents, grandparents and his faith.
