Ear to the ground:
“Oh daddy, look at the geese. They’re so beautiful! Did you bring your shotgun?”
– A decidedly Durango take on local wildlife

Let the games begin
With the recent passage of Amendment 64, one might think that traditional 4/20 festivities around the state might lose a little of their potency. And while this may be the case at CU Boulder, where university officials are trying to snuff out the annual 420 gathering which drew an estimated 10,000 “demonstrators” last year (mostly high school students), things are kicking into high gear in Denver.

Wednesday marked the beginning of World Cannabis Week in the Mile High City, a five-day extravaganja of all things marijuana, from tours of local dispensaries, cannabis sampling, grow tours, parties, rallies and concerts. Events culminate with the first-ever High Times “US Cannabis Cup,” held April 20-21 at the EXDO Event Center in Denver.

The sold-out (sorry – you weren’t actually thinking of driving up there, were you?) event features two days of workshops like “The Art of Edibles;” lectures such as “Marijuana War Stories” and “Advanced Cultivation;” and even a real, live 420 wedding, at, you guessed it, 4:20 p.m.
For those who make it through the day intact, Cypress Hill takes the Red Rocks stage Saturday night (bus transportation provided) followed by “An Evening with Snoop Lion” (formerly Snoop Dogg) on Sunday.

And in case you had to ask: Yes, the event will include an outdoor “medicating area” for Colorado mmj cardholders as well as a separate outdoor smoking area for all adults, regardless of residency, “in accordance with Colorado’s new law legalizing marijuana,” according to hightimes.com
If a quiet night at home is more your speed, then be sure to check out the latest board game to hit coffee tables everywhere, “Colorado Cannabis Craze.”

Brought to you by Louisville-based Hilljack Entertainment (were you expecting Milton Bradley?) the game is based on buying and selling different strains of weed around the state. The goal is to get all eight city tokens (including one from Durango), sell your pot for $1 million and return to DIA. Get busted and spend time in Canon City or win the jackpot in Cripple Creek. Order now and get a limited edition, packaged in a 30-inch mailing tube designed to look like a joint. www.hilljackgames.com.

And speaking of grass, Purango Dolo presents the 2013 Rocky Mountain Grass Poloships and Brewers Cup this weekend at Buckley Park. Teams of four will battle it out on the turf starting Friday night in a quest to win the coveted Colorado Can Cup (which we've been assured has nothing to do with the event in Denver.) Events continue Saturday at 1 p.m. with a street party, beer garden and music from Hello Dollface and Black Market Electric. For a full schedule, go to:  durangopolo.wordpress.com.
