Going downhill fast
It’s no secret that Fort Lewis College cyclists excel at uphill and cross country riding. But the Fort also is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in bombing downhill as well.
It’s no secret that Fort Lewis College cyclists excel at uphill and cross country riding. But the Fort also is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in bombing downhill as well.
Last weekend, four riders from the Fort took home the gold in the second race of the three-race Red Bull Final Descent series, held in Winter Park.
Formerly known as “The Burner,” a 12-hour downhill endurance race at Angel Fire, N.M., the Red Bull series has blossomed into a competitive downhill series, billing itself as “a mountain biking challenge that pushes riders to the brink and back, over some of the most technically challenging terrain in North America.”

Last weekend’s race saw 150 riders from throughout the country taking to the course on a chilly morning to test their skills on Winter Park’s “grueling” Trestle Mountain Bike Park. Winners are based on the amount of laps completed in the 12-hour period.
As the sun began to drop, Team FLC, including Adam Digby, Andrew Fortini, Joe Crosby and Zack Graveson, emerged victorious, with 37 laps.
Other winners included Waylon Smith from Newhall, Calif., who took the Men’s Pro Division with an amazing 37 laps. Kim Godfrey, from Louisville, Colo., finished 34 laps to take home the victory in the Female Pro Division.

Prior to Winter Park, racers competed in Jackson Hole in August. The finals will be held Sept. 29 in Angel Fire. Each stop in the series offers a $5,000 cash purse for the Pro Divisions and free schwag from Oakely, Fox, Troy Lee and 5.10 Shoes in the Expert Divisions. The overall series winners—the male and female rider who posts the most laps (by distance) combined for all events—takes home an additional $500 and ultimate end-of-season bragging rights.

And while the fall colors may be a good excuse to go, the best is that proceeds from the $69 registration fee go straight to Fort Lewis College’s Tom Danielson Cycling Scholarship fund. The tour also includes a post-ride meal with local brew, T-shirt and “the best goody bag around.”
The Blaze also is looking for volunteers and sponsors as well as riders.
