Durangoans reach out to the Jersey Shore

What: Dance Party fund-raiser for Jersey Shore relief
Where: Durango Elks Lodge
When: Sat., Dec. 1, 7-10 p.m.

Bust out your eyeliner and big hair – the Jersey Shore is coming to Durango. Two local sisters, Mary Joe Rakowski and Sandra Fleming, who are originally from New Jersey, will be hosting the dance party fund-raiser for their home state from 7-10 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 1 at the Durango Elks Lodge, 901 E. 2nd Ave.

After watching Super Storm Sandy hit the East Coast and leave much of their home turf devastated, these two wanted to help. One thing they could do from afar was host a fund-raiser right here in Durango.

The suggested donation at the door is $10 and all proceeds go to the American Red Cross, designated for Jersey Shore Relief. Hard good donations are also being accepted at DurangoSpace, 1221 Main Ave.

DJ CodeStar will be spinning the tunes, and attendees can get their picture taken with two “well-known Jersey personalities.” So channel your inner “Joisey” accent and get ready to cut a rug for Jersey Shore Relief.

For additional information about the event, email JoiseyGirls4JerseyShore@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/JoiseyGirls4JerseyShoreRelief?ref=hl.

Get in the swing with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
What: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “Wild & Swingin’ Holiday Party”
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Tues., Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
Get into the swing of the holiday season when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy brings its “Wild & Swingin’ Holiday Party” back to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 7 p.m., Tues., Dec. 4.

The retro swing band, celebrating its 20th anniversary, helped revive swing music in the early 1990s with classic zoot-suit style. Today, they return to the Southwest to perform a live version of their popular album “Everything You for Want Christmas.”

Known for their super-sizzling live shows, the band fuses the swinging days of the 1940s and 50s, classic jazz, Dixieland and big band music. This eclectric combination has made them one of the most popular touring bands on the road, carrying on the tradition of the legendary big bands and orchestras.

Although the show focuses on holiday music, the band will likely include songs from its latest album “Rattle Them Bones,” which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

The doors open at 6 p.m. for snacks and beverages. For more information, call 247-7657 or visit www.durangoconcerts.com.
