Holiday book drive under way for local families

What: “Families Helping Families Holiday Book Drive”
Where: Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
When: Mon., Nov. 19
The season for giving gets started with the 5th annual “Families Helping Families Holiday Book Drive,” which begins Mon., Nov. 19 at Maria’s Bookshop.

The drive benefits children participating in the Family Center of Durango’s Family Development Program, which is designed to give families an opportunity to work closely with an advocate to set goals and secure resources.

Anyone who visits the bookshop during this time can select a card off of the book drive “tree.” Each card features information about a local child served by the program. Booksellers can help find the perfect book for that child, and Maria’s Bookshop offers a 15 percent discount on the book drive purchase. The books are given to the kids at the “December Delights” holiday party at The Family Center on Dec. 19.

Maria’s Bookshop will be collecting books through Dec. 17. For more information about the book drive, call 247-1438 or visit www.mariasbookshop.com.

The nature-modern medicine connection

What: “Natural Products as Inspirations for Drugs: from Aspirin to Zocor”
Where: FLC Noble Hall, Room 130
When: Thurs., Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.
Make the connection between nature and the medicine cabinet with “Natural Products as Inspirations for Drugs: from Aspirin to Zocor,” part of the Life-Long Learning Lecture Series, at 7 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 15, at Fort Lewis College’s Noble Hall, Room 130.

Many people might be surprised to learn that most of the drugs prescribed by doctors and approved by the Federal Drug Administration originated from naturally occurring compounds. The free presentation focuses on learning how these compounds are identified, and how their structures are adjusted to make the natural products into more effective drugs. And join the discussion about whether “natural” medicines are any safer than “synthetic” ones.

Kenny Miller, assistant professor of chemistry at Fort Lewis, starts the conversation about this intersection of traditional medicine and modern biology, chemistry and pharmacy, and what research is being done at the school on natural product synthesis.

For more information, visit www.fortlewis.edu or call 247-7401.
