Ear to the ground:
“While you were in the shower we cancelled Christmas.”

Tear along the dotted line
Attention extreme couponers: If you’ve been holding out on any holiday purchases until the arrival of the new 2013 Be Local Coupon Book, you can now exhale.

One of the most highly anticipated days on the local shoppers calendar is nigh. The 2013 Be Local Coupon Book is scheduled to hit stores starting this Thurs., Nov. 15. (Local First members can pick-up their complimentary books at Occasions Bridal Boutique, across the street from Carvers, on Fri., Nov. 16, from noon - 4 p.m.)

As in years past, this year’s edition is chock full o’ deals and bargains, including such frenzied-mob inducing favorites as 2-for-1 train tickets, meal deals, and coupons for the ever-important gear and beer. But that’s not all! The 2013 Be Local book is bigger and better than ever, featuring 279 special deals from 207 businesses.

Look for the book, priced at a low, low $18, at locally owned independent businesses the week of Thanksgiving. But don’t be a turkey – as usual, the books are expected to disappear quicker than the shake of a tail feather.

Doggone do-gooders
The dog days of summer may be behind us, but for dozens of homeless pets at Annie's Orphans, the dog days of winter are here.

As such, a local effort is under way to help the local no-kill shelter in winterizing the animal's kennels and pens for the long, cold nights ahead. The first-ever Annie's Volunteer Work Day is taking place this Sat., Nov. 17, starting at 10 a.m.

The effort was the idea of Eric Sirois, aka "Rent-a-Man," who will be donning his tool belt to help build and repair dog houses, mend fences, lay down straw, walk dogs and ensure heaters are in proper working order.

"Annie's Orphans has had a tough year," said Sirois. "So, lets help them out. Come on out, bring some extra building materials if you have them, and some friends (all are welcome)."

Coffee will be provided for humans. Sirois can be contacted at 970-769-2652. For more on Annie's Orphans, or for directions, go to www.anniesk9orphans.org.
