'Cuban World Music comes to Durango
What: Latin jazz group Tiempo Libre
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Thur., March 15, 7:30 p.m.

Three-time Grammy-nominated band Tiempo Libre will be making an appearance at the Community Concert Hall tonight at 7:30 p.m. The world-renowned band will be introducing their style of “timba,” a fun, fast-paced Latin jazz sure to put the audience on its feet.

The band members grew up as individual musicians in Cuba, spending their teen years fashioning homemade radios to secretly listen to American pop and soul music, despite the laws in their country banning American radio at the time. After being inspired by both traditional Cuban conservatories and American broadcasting, the various members all fled their country, finding themselves in Miami. After experiencing successful solo musical work, the seven artists united in 2001 to become “The first authentic, all Cuban timba band in the United States.”

Now on tour performing their new album, “My Secret Radio” (aptly named from their experiences in Cuba as teen-agers), Tiempo Libre has arrived in Durango to bring their quick, upbeat dance music to the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. Arriving in full force with seven members, the band will surely bring the audience to its feet.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for wine, snacks and nonalcoholic beverages. Show begins at 7:30. Tickets for Tiempo Libre, ($25/$35) are available online at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 247-7657, or at the Ticket Office in Downtown Durango.

Banff Film Festival at the Concert Hall
What: The Banff Mountain Film Festival, Durango chapter
Where: Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Sat., March 17, 7 p.m.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival will be descending upon Durango this Saturday, bringing with it a “showcase of outstanding adventure, exploration and mountain culture films from around the world.”

The annual Festival travels the whole globe, amounting to more than 635 screenings scattered across 32 countries. The films are known to incorporate the fast-paced adrenaline activities of mountain towns into a candid portrayal of the unique, beautiful culture and landscape of our high-altitude homes. Whether it be skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, climbing, biking, hiking or general love of the insanity bred in the peaks, this film festival will surely cater to your passion.

For this particular screening, all of the proceeds will be donated to Rocky Mountain Wild, a group dedicated to the support and restoration of Colorado’s wild lands. The screening will begin at 7 p.m., followed by an overview of Rocky Mountain Wild’s latest efforts.

How mushrooms can help save the world
What: Video and discussion on mushroom uses in everyday life
Where: Fort Lewis College Noble Hall, Room 130
When: Wed., March 21, 7-9 p.m.

Mountain Studies Institute will be exalting the lowly mushroom next week when it presents “Solutions From the Underground: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World.” The talk, which is part of the Beaming Bioneers Speaker Series, will be delivered by recognized author Paul Stamets, one of the world’s foremost experts on the biology of mushrooms and fungi.

Stamets’ talk will be followed by a Q&A with local fungi experts Katie Holgate, owner of Mycologic Design, and Art Goodtimes and Scott Koch, co-directors of the Telluride Shroomfest.

Stamets, who founded the medicinal and gourmet mushroom business Fungi Perfecti in 1980 in Olympia, Wash., will illuminate some potentially world-changing, fungus-based ecological, medicinal and nutritional discoveries in the prerecorded talk. You can find more information on Stamet’s work at www.fungi.com.

Fellow presenters Goodtimes, Holgate and Koch will discuss mushrooms and local efforts at mycoremediation (the process of using fungi to clean up contaminants in the environment), as well as take questions after the video. The video begins at 7 p.m., and discussion will follow until 9 p.m.
