'All in' explores America's love-hate of poker
What: "All in - the Poker Movie"
When: March 9, 7 p.m.; March 10-11, 2  & 7 p.m.; March 12-14, 8:30 p.m.
Where: Back Space Theatre, 1120 Main Ave.

Whether you're a diehard player or just a curious onlooker, "All in- The Poker Movie" takes a fascinating look at the recent rise, fall and controversy surrounding the uniquely American pasttime.

The so-called "Poker Boom" of the early 2000s was fueled by ESPN, which significantly expanded its coverage of the World Series of Poker in 2003. The $2.5 million purse was eventually won by 27-year-old Nashville accountant Chris Moneymaker, an amateur who had qualified on the poker website, PokerStars.

Moneymaker, a proverbial anybody, inspired untold Americans to quit their day jobs to pursue the dream of being a poker champion. Within a few years, the number of participants in the World Series of Poker skyrocketed from 839 to 8,773.

But the party ended April 15, 2011, when the Department of Justice indicted chief executives at three of the country's biggest online poker companies on a variety of charges, ranging from bank fraud to running an illegal gambling operation. The crackdown, known as "Black Friday," came as a shock to the millions of Americans who play poker online for their income.

The documentary explores poker's renaissance in the early 2000s, from a game once played by conmen on riverboats to a nationally televised "sport" played by Matt Damon, George Clooney and Leonardo Dicaprio, and how it became the battleground for personal freedom. See how poker has become synonymous for making it rich quick, yet seems unable to escape it's tarnished image.

Solas returns to Concert Hall
What: Celtic supergroup Solas
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Wed., March 14, 7:30 p.m.

Durango will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day a little early this year. Celtic-folk supergroup Solas returns to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Solas invigorated the Irish music scene by combining traditional instruments like the guitar, banjo and bouzouki with a wide range of material. This contemporary view adds spice to a sound rooted in Irish reels, jigs and other folk-song formats.

The group came together in the 1990s but hit it big after performing on “A Prairie Home Companion” in 1996. Their upcoming project, “Shamrock City,” is the first album the group produced without a record label backing them up. It is inspired by a relative of the band’s co-founder Seamus Egan. His great, great uncle came to Philadelphia in 1910 from Ireland, and eventually made his way to Montana where he died at the age of 25.

“Shamrock City” tells the story of the life and death of an Irish immigrant, as well as inspires fans to share their family histories. The album is more of a project, starting a discussion that expands into the issues facing America today.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and refreshments. For additional information about the show, visit www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.
