Come and play with the real deal
What: Meet the Trucks
Where: La Plata County Fairgrounds
When: Sat., June 30, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Everyone likes to play with toy trucks. Well, here’s a chance to come say “Hey!” to a real-life big rig or helicopter at Meet the Trucks from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

This hands-on festival gives attendees a chance to get a close look at all types of trucks, machines, building equipment and even a helicopter. Kids can touch all the equipment and even get a ride in the bucket truck.

The event is $3 for everyone, except kids under 3 can join the fun for free. It is a fund-raiser for Skills for Living and Learning School, a nonprofit that offers alternative education for children with learning disabilities. The school offers kindergarten through 3rd grade classes, an after-school program, preschool program and a summer camp.

Food and beverages are available, along with some giveaways. It’s also a chance to celebrate someone’s special day – organizers are billing it as a great venue for birthday parties, too,

Rietveld has lowered his base pack weight with everything except food, fuel and water, down to less than 7 pounds. He’ll share his secrets to keeping it together without sacrificing comfort. Get the steps to lightening packs and increasing the enjoyment of backpacking.

The San Juan Mountains Association, which promotes responsible care of resources with education and involvement, hosts the event.
