Putting on for another Animas River Days
What: Animas River Days
Where: All around Durango
When: Fri., June 8 - Sun., June 10
Durango's annual rolicking celebration of the Animas River shoves off this weekend for another run featuring films, racing, rodeo and live music all weekend long.

The festivities officially kick off Friday at the Smiley Theatre with the Reel Paddling Film festival, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. This year's film fest features locally produced films "High Water," by Torri Lopez; "Jammin," which catches up with members of a 1983 Grand Canyon trip; "Generation," from Chase Nobles and Cully Brown featuring local creeks; "Hard Labor in Siberia II," a Russian exploratory by Matt Wilson, formerly of Telluride Kayak School and new owner of Four Corners Whitewater; "Pollys II," a parody of whitewater culture; and "Animas Paddle Trail 2030," an introduction to the national river trail concept. The evening's features are "Nomad," the latest from Forge motion pictures; "Remains of a River," a source-to-sea expedition of the Colorado River; and "Frontier," whitewater adventures from China, Norway, Mexico and Iceland.

On-river activities get under way the following morning at Santa Rita Park with slalom races from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. as well as the river dog competition and boatercross, which starts at 1:30 p.m. A completely new feature this year will be the WOW ("Walk on Water") Bubbles. These large, flexible bubbles will be available for demo or just gawking during the weekend's festivities. There will also be live music at the park all afternoon, including a show by Freeplay from 4:30 - 6 p.m.

Saturday's events culminate in the ever-popular River Parade, which takes off at 5 p.m. from 32nd Street and ends at Cundiff Park, behind Four Corners River Sports. Post-parade party and festivities continue at Ska Brewing.

River Days action continues Sunday with the whitewater kayak rodeo at Corner Pocket from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., followed by the inflatable rodeo from 1-3 p.m., as well as food, music and vendors.
