Feel the beat at the Community Concert Hall

What: TAO: The Art of the Drum
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Mon., Feb. 20, 7 p.m.

Move to the beat of a Japanese drummer. TAO, a traditional Japanese drumming group, brings “The Art of the Drum” to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 7 p.m. Monday.

Like the heartbeat of a community, gymnasts, composers and musicians come together in this stage production. Performers from different backgrounds bring their diverse styles to one stage to create a contemporary show with traditional influences. It showcases athleticism, costumes, innovative choreography and, of course, explosive Taiko drumming.

These performers turned rock stars of traditional Japanese drumming have impressed critics and audiences for years. Taiko drumming, originally performed as a ritual to inspire rain or a good harvest, is kept alive by this group formed in Aichi, Japan.

TAO has played hundreds of sold-out shows and performed for more than 5 million people in 17 countries.

Its members spend years training at a specially designed compound in the mountains of Japan. Each day they take time to walk, run, learn martial arts, dance and drum.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments and snacks. For additional details, visit www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.
