Winter warriors strap on the snowshoes
What: The 2nd annual Winter Warrior 5k & 10k Snowshoe Race
Where: Durango Nordic Center
When: Sat., Feb. 11, 10 a.m.

Strap the snowshoes on and get ready to run. The Durango Nordic Center hosts the 2nd annual Winter Warrior 5k & 10k Snowshoe Race at 10 a.m. this Saturday.

The event benefits the Durango Youth Nordic Club, and everyone is invited. This family-friendly event also offers a Kids Snowdash. No snowshoes are needed to join in.

Racers who finish first, second and third in several categories get more than just bragging rights. They are awarded medals, too.

The course is designed to United States Specialty Sports Association’s National Qualifying standards. It features singletrack, descents, climbs, groomed sections and a 500-foot elevation gain. Cowbells and clans are welcome to encourage racers, and there will be prizes for all the attendees.

Rental snowshoes are available at the Nordic Center, but early arrival is suggested. Registration begins at 9 a.m. on the day of the race. For additional information about the event, call 385-2114.

Laugh out loud with comic legend Paula Poundstone. KSUT Public Radio hosts this ambassador of comedy at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The event, which benefits KSUT, features the first woman to perform at the White House correspondent’s dinner and the first woman to win a cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Performance.

Poundstone is the national spokeswoman for the Association of Library Trustees Advocates Friends & Foundations, a network of library supporters, and has recently been inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame.

Not just a legend on the stage and screen, the Emmy and Ace Award winner is also the author of There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say, with a foreword by Mary Tyler Moore.
The nationally renowned comic icon is also a regular panelist on NPR’s news quiz show, “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me.”
