Educators and students can get a new look at learning with the Real-World Learning Mini-Forum with Karen Brown from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.

Mountain Studies Institute hosts this event for formal and informal educators.

Bioneer Karen Brown, creative director for the Center for Ecoliteracy, speaks about the real world as the ultimate environment for students and the benefits of project-based learning in a 30-minute video session.The presentation is followed by a mini-forum designed to encourage audience members to share their stories. Attendees can bring a 3-5 minute story of real-world learning and pictures.

Brown is an award-winning designer and has lectured to audiences across the globe. She has helped the Center for Ecoliteracy develop programs like the Rethinking School Lunch Guide and Big Ideas.

Film explores race, power and history
What: “More Than a Month”
Where: The Back Space Theatre

Take a look at race and power in America through the lens of history. The Back Space Theatre, 1120 Main Ave., presents a free screening of “More Than a Month” at 8 p.m. Tuesday for PBS Free Movie Night.

The film poses the question, should Black History Month be ended? Filmmaker Shukree Tilghman explores this issue on an amusing and thought-provoking campaign across the country. Presented by PBS Cinema, this Independent Lens film examines race and power in contemporary America.

He also looks at Native American, Hispanic and Women’s history and the implications of relegating the history of an entire group in America to only one month.

The film will also be screened at the Durango Discovery Museum at 2 p.m. Feb. 11, and the Fort Lewis College’s Student Union, Vallecito Room, at 6 p.m. Feb. 21.

Local journalist and political cartoonist present “Going Out in Style: Death Through the Lens of Art and Words” at 7 p.m. at Fort Lewis College’s Noble Hall, Room 130.

Local journalist Ann Butler and political cartoonist Judith Reynolds tackle this difficult subject matter and explore the philosophy of dying and the history of death in art, including the art of writing obituaries and drawing obituary cartoons.

This lecture is part of the college’s Life-Long Learning Series sponsored by Professional Associates. The series seeks to enrich the intellectual life of the college and the community.
