Magical ballet returns to the Concert Hall
What: The Nutcracker Ballet
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Fri., Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
Local dancers join the professionals of the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara for the magical stage presentation of “The Nutcracker,” opening 7 p.m. Fri., Dec. 14, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Each year the artistic director of the California ballet company, Rodney Gustafson, returns to Durango with the original classical ballet in this Tchaikovsky masterpiece, creating a traditional “Nutcracker” set in Victorian times that is fun for all ages.

The show is based on the book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman. It tells the story of a young German girl, Clara, whose godfather Drosselmeyer, a skilled clock and toy maker, presents her with a toy nutcracker for Christmas. In Clara’s dream later that night, the toy nutcracker comes to life and takes her on a journey to a magical land, where a cast of unusual characters entertains her through dance.
Part of the charm of this performance is the addition of local dancers who get to dance alongside the professionals from Santa Barbara. The show also runs at 2 and 7 p.m. Sat., Dec. 15, and 2 p.m. Sun., Dec. 16. Doors open at 6 p.m.

For additional information about the event, visit www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.

Santa Claus is coming to the Strater Theatre
What: Morning with Santa
Where: Henry Strater Theatre
When: Sat., Dec. 15 from 9-11 a.m.

Forget the North Pole! Santa can be found right here in Durango at the “Morning with Santa “event from 9-11 a.m. Sat., Dec. 15 at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

Spend a festive holiday morning with everyone’s favorite jolly fellow, his elves and his friends. A buffet breakfast is served from 9-11 a.m. with a Holiday Sing-A-Long performance starting at 9:30 a.m. and photos with Santa at 10 a.m. Children get the chance to decorate their own pancakes, create artwork to take home and much, much more. And, of course, everyone gets to tell Santa exactly what they would like for Christmas.

The event is also an opportunity to donate hats, gloves and blankets for Project Merry Christmas. For more information about the event, visit henrystratertheatre.com or call 375-7160.
