Something to squawk about
While Harleys rule the road this weekend, mountain bikes will once again dominate local trails. The fat tire fun begins Saturday with the return of Fort Lewis College’s annual Squawker Classic. The Short Track will take place on the factory trails behind the dorms from 8 - 11a.m., with a challenging mix of “ripping” singletrack and dirt roads.

Then comes the Dual Slalom at Chapman Hill from 1 - 5 p.m. on an action-packed, spectator-friendly course loaded with berms, a rhythm section and flat turns. “We’ve been working on it all fall, so it is in great shape,” said FLC Cycling Director Dave Hagen.

The squawction continues Sunday with the Cross Country race, starting at 8 a.m. behind the dorms. This year’s course will take racers on a loop around the college, including the Rim Trail, Lion’s Den, Chapman and the 8th Street Trail. Racing will conclude at 1p.m., and anyone using those trails Sunday morning are asked to be on the lookout for racers.

Also Sunday, a slightly more involved race will be taking place along the Colorado and Dry Fork Trails northwest of town.

The Kennebec Enduro is expecting to see at least 90 riders for its inaugural running from Kennebec Pass to the Dry Fork Trailhead. Starting at 8 a.m., riders will be shuttled via buses up La Plata Canyon to Boren Creek, where they will ride the rest of the way up La Plata Canyon Road to Kennebec Pass. The race will begin at Kennebec Pass at 9 a.m. and end at the Dry Fork Trailhead by 3 p.m.

No closures will be put in place, but the public should expect increased traffic on the trails, as well as La Plata Canyon Road and Dry Fork Road (County Road 208).

The event promoter is discouraging race participants from parking private vehicles at the Dry Fork Trailhead and instead encouraging them to ride their bikes back into town. However, an event trailer, two trucks and a medical support truck will be staged at the Dry Fork Trailhead during the race.

The Kennebec Enduro is put on by Bigfoot Productions.  For more information, go to: www.bigmountainenduro.com.

And last but not least, for those who prefer the action a little closer to home, Mountain Bike Specialists will be holding a Specialized demo and trail tour at Twin Buttes on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Annie Cheeney will be leading the tour, which takes off at 11 a.m. followed by lunch from Bread at 12:30 p.m. Olympian and Specialized rider Todd Wells is expected to make an appearance to sign autographs in the afternoon as well.

Participants are asked to park west of the Giant gas station. Or better yet, ride.
