Watch the ultimate Iron Horse Cookoff
What: Iron Horse Chef Competition Finale
Where: Durango Farmers Market
When: Sat., Aug. 25, 9-11:30 a.m.
It’s time to get cookin’ for the final competition of the 5th annual Durango Iron Horse Chef cookoff from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Durango Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of First National Bank on 8th Street.

The event, hosted by Colorado State University Extension-La Plata County in cooperation with Kitchen Koach, pits two great chefs in a head-to-head battle against each other and the clock. This year’s semifinal winner, Warren Smith, takes on the 2011 winner, Dennis Morrisroe.

The two have just an hour and a half to shop and prepare dishes from the Farmers Market, and the winner takes home the coveted traveling trophy, a personalized Durango Iron Horse Chef Competition Jacket, and the title The Iron Horse Chef of 2012.

For more information about the event, email parmenterdm@co.laplata.co.us or call 382-6464.

Meet the kings of the Colorado 14ers
What: Meet the Author event
Where: Maria’s Bookshop
When: Mon., Aug. 27 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Check out the view from the top of Colorado’s tallest peaks with a Meet the Author event featuring Jon Kedrowski, author of Sleeping on the Summits: Colorado Fourteener High Bivys, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

Mountain geographer Jon Kedrowski, who successfully climbed Mount Everest this year, and meteorologist Chris Tomer joined forces in 2011 for a groundbreaking project in which the two experienced the tallest of what Colorado has to offer. Kedrowski slept on the summit of all 55 Colorado 14ers in just 95 days, and Tomer joined him for many of the bivys, providing real-time weather analysis and forecasts.

Their story is now a full-color, coffee-table style book with high resolution photography of every summit, sunsets and sunrises. It also features stories of rogue storms, bear attacks and peak-specific discussions on meteorology and geography from Tomer and Kedrowski.

Attendees get the chance to meet Kedrowski and have their copy of the book autographed. For additional information about the event, visit www.mariasbookshop.com or call 247-1438.
