Fort Lewis College celebrates homecoming

The aspens may be signaling a change in seasons, but summer still rules the campus at Fort Lewis College. Celebrations are under way for Homecoming 2011, themed “100 Years of Summer” in honor of the school’s centennial year. Activities continue through Sunday.
 
The weekend’s big event hits Main Avenue at 6 p.m. on Friday with the annual Homecoming Parade. Bookending the weekend’s festivities is the signature football game at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Dennison Field when the FLC Skyhawks (1-4) take on the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (1-4).
 
The public and FLC Alumni are encouraged to join celebrations like the Homecoming Bonfire at 8 p.m. Friday, an Alumni Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday, and Tailgate Party from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday with food, live music and games. Andrea Avantaggio, co-owner of the bookshop and a cancer survivor, moderates a panel discussion titled “Cancer as a Springboard for Cultivating Inner Power.” Attendees can listen to conversations about “how the experience of cancer, unwanted as it is, can be an opportunity for self-discovery and self-compassion.”
 
Panel members include Naturopathic Physician Nasha Winters, Mental Health Counselor Janet Curry, and Leigh Fortson, author of Embrace, Release, Heal. The focus will be on turning adversity into advantage for cancer patients and their families. The panel will also discuss the variety of treatment options available. Specifically, how modern medicines and alternative therapies can work together.
