Tour de Ski makes its return on Saturday
What: The 4th annual Nordic ski race, which features 42-, 20-, 12- & 6-kilometer courses
Where: The mountains and valleys around Durango Mountain Resort
When: Sat., Jan. 22

Nordic skiing will go to new local heights this Saturday. The Tour de Ski returns for its fourth running on Jan. 22

The Tour de Ski was the brainchild of husband-wife team Travis Brown and Mary Monroe. Brown, a professional cyclist, also took the NCAA championship for skate skiing while attending CU-Boulder. Monroe, who heads Durango’s trails advocacy group Trails 2000, traces her roots to Wisconsin, home of the Birkebeiner, America’s largest ski marathon.

The 42-kilometer marathon course is the Tour de Ski’s major draw. The race traverses terrain typically off limits to skate skiers with the track pushing elevations over 11,000 feet and racers climbing upwards of 3,000 vertical feet. The race’s numbers make it the highest Nordic race in America and among the most demanding ski marathons anywhere.

The Tour de Ski also has a softer side, and skiers can compete in a half-marathon (20k) or 6k or 12k loops in the Hermosa Valley. Views of Grizzly Peak, climbs up to Cascade Divide Road, rest stations complete with hot chocolate and cookies from local bakery Bread round out the Tour de Ski. As an added plus, the race benefits Trails 2000 and the Durango Nordic Ski Club.

For more information or to register, visit www.tourdeski.org.
