The Fort Lewis College Art Gallery hosts the Graduating Senior Art Majors Exhibition from April 18-30. The show is a culmination of the students’ coursework and includes senior-level art and humanities majors working in a variety of media. The exhibit was juried, designed and installed by students.

SkyFest makes its return to Fort Lewis College
What: The 7th annual community music festival  
Where: The Fort Lewis College Clocktower
When: Sat., April 16, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.  

The Campus in the Sky is going to get down this Saturday. The 7th annual SkyFest, a music festival spotlighting local and national talent, returns to the Clocktower at Fort Lewis College from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

The line-up opens with the alternative jam band Alma Desnuda; Denver-based SuperSeed, a family friendly rock group; and Dane Drewis, a soulful blues singer/songwriter. Aftergrass and A Dub Rock Band, two staples for the Durango music community, will round out the performances.  In addition to the music, SkyFest will include a variety of other activities: the Fort Lewis College Anthropology Club is hosting the Cow Plop; the Fort Lewis College Japan Club will sell sushi and T-shirts in support of relief efforts in Japan; there will be carnival games with prizes for all ages; and KDUR Community Radio Station will be broadcasting via live remote.

SkyFest is a student-organized event for the campus and the Durango community. Last year, more than 1,500 locals and students turned out for the festivities.

Animas High School to host All Sports Swap
What: A gear swap and benefit for the local charter school
Where: The Boys & Girls Club, 2750 Main Ave.
When: Sat., April 12 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.  

Durangoans can clean out the gear shed and lend support to Animas High School this week. AHS holds its first All Sports Swap at the Boys and Girls Club this Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Locals can either donate their lightly used sports equipment and all proceeds directly to Animas or man their own booth and donate 20 percent of sales to the local charter school. Naturally, the event also has an educational element. Michelle Stowers, an ER nurse at Mercy, and Leo Lloyd, of Durango Search and Rescue, will have an informational table at the sale. Literature on safe driving and river safety will be available, and there will also be a ski, bike and skateboarding helmet giveaway.

Annual Earth Day Celebration set for Saturday
What: Durango Nature Studies’ annual observance of Earth Day

Durango tips its hat to Mother Earth this week. Durango Nature Studies’ annual Earth Day Celebration returns to Rotary Park this Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

The family friendly event will showcase workshops and educational displays in hopes of encouraging changes within the community and fostering a healthier, sustainable environment. A few of the offerings include bee keeping, gardening, composting and recycling.

In addition, the Durango Recycling Cooperative will display student art projects made entirely from recycled products. There will also be an informative children’s activity area, live music and food. Also on tap will be a 1-mile Family Fun Run. Registration forms can be picked up at Backcountry Experience or The Running & Tennis Store.

Durango Nature Studies is a local nonprofit dedicated to providing nature, science and environmental education to the students and communities in the Four Corner area. www.durangonaturestudies.org for details.
