Apple Days Festival to return to Durango
What: The 3rd annual celebration of local sustainability

When: Sun., Oct. 17, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Durangoans can “share the abundance” this Sunday at
the third-ever Home Grown Apple Days Festival. The Oct. 17 event is
aimed at improving local sustainability and includes a variety of
events ranging from free “living local” workshops and
sustainability demonstrations to live entertainment, a beer garden,
and games for kids and big kids alike.
The free family event showcases and celebrates the apple. It
also provides opportunities for residents and tourists to learn
what they can do to promote and practice food security and
sustainability. Over the past two years, the Apple Days Festival
has become a highlight of the fall season, and is a fantastic event
for all ages and members of the family.
Free workshops and info booths will hit on topics ranging from
local economies to food production. And live music will be on tap
all afternoon along with a beer garden featuring locally crafted
beers and food vendors serving locally grown foods.

Open Shutter Gallery to exhibit ‘Abyssinia’
What: An exhibit of the award-winning photography of Joey L

Images of Abyssinia visit Main Avenue this month. The Open
Shutter Gallery is exhibiting the dramatic color photography of
Joey L’s portfolio, “Abyssinia.” The show opens
Oct. 15 with a 5-8 p.m. reception and runs through Dec. 1. The
gallery will also host a screening of Joey’s DVD,
“Faces of a Vanishing World,” at 5 p.m. on Oct. 22.
Joey L is a young Canadian photographer based in New York who
has photographed vanishing indigenous cultures around the world.
Over the past 12 months, he has visited India, Romania, Moldova,
Ethiopia and Indonesia living with the local people and tribes.
Joey was recently awarded first place in the International
Photography Awards for his Abyssinia project, which was shot in
Ethiopia’s Omo Valley and features portraits of various
warring tribes.

FLC hosts Homecoming Weekend celebration
What: The local college’s annual celebration of Skyhawks young and old
Where: All over Durango
When: Oct. 15 & 16
Skyhawks past and present will descend upon Durango this
weekend. Fort Lewis College hosts its Homecoming Weekend beginning
Oct. 15. The local college has packed Friday and Saturday with
events that are open to the public.
The annual Fort Lewis College Homecoming Parade will make its
way down Main Avenue beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15. Parade floats
from groups across campus will be on display, all vying for the
coveted Homecoming Parade trophy. A reception for alumni will be
held right after the parade at 6:30 p.m. at the Irish Embassy. The
Homecoming Bonfire will follow the parade at the FLC softball
complex. The fire will be lit at 8 p.m., and food and entertainment
will also be on hand.
On Oct. 16, the Homecoming Tailgate Party kicks off at 10 a.m.
next to the Ray Dennison Memorial Field parking lot. Food, fun and
games will be enjoyed before the action moves to the Homecoming
Football Game versus Western State at 1 p.m.
