Durango BMX to host its annual Fund-day
What: The local non-profit’s annual membership drive
Where: The Durango BMX track, located behind Big 5 in Gateway Park
When: Sat., June 5, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  

Cyclists young, old and everywhere in between can get a taste of BMX racing this weekend. Durango BMX’s annual Family Fund-ay and Membership Drive returns to the track June 5 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The event features a Parent- Kid Tag Race; Strider and Pit Bike Races for the tykes; a Jump Contest; Pump Track Race; and a PRO-AM with all funds going to local racers; as well as the main event – free racing for all cyclists at 2 p.m. Participants can also enjoy free hot dogs; free track riding clinics from pro rider Todd Burdick; a gear swap; silent auction and raffle; and a bake sale fund-raiser.

All proceeds will fund the supplies needed to keep the track in top riding condition. Durango BMX is a nonprofit organization whose volunteers provide everything from track maintenance to race organization and operation. For more information or to donate items for auction & raffles, call 903-9192.

Music from throughout the world takes the local stage as the Animas Music Festival gets under way. The 17th annual festival kicks off June 5 with “Invisible Men” and continues with shows on June 8 & 11.

“Invisible Men” goes on at Roshong Recital Hall at 7 p.m. and features the “Les Invisibles” Percussion Quartet and Animas Chamber Players performing the music of silent films. The festival shifts gears at 7 p.m. on June 8 with “From the Heart of South America,” and the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church show spotlights Allen Mathews, of Portland, Ore., playing classical guitar. The Animas Music Festival will draw to a close at 7 p.m. June 11 with “Music of Contemplation” by festival founders Cyprian Consiglio and John Pennington. Consiglio and Pennington will present musical settings of poKabir and Hafiz from around the globe. The closing concert meets at St. Columba Catholic Church.

Dolores River Festival returns on Saturday

Four Corners residents will rally around a great river this weekend. The annual Dolores River Festival returns to Joe Rowell Park in Dolores on June 5.

The annual event celebrating the Dolores River features local, regional and national bands. Gates open at 10 a.m. and live music will be performed all day. Taking the stage this year will be the New Dolorians, Julia Massey & The Five Finger Discount, Salem, and Austin-based Topaz & Mudphonic. Soul Kitchen, an acclaimed Albuquerque band that spotlights the soulful vocals of native-Chicagoan Hillary Smith, will headline the festival.

There will also be activities like the Fun Run, free raft rides, a downriver race, performances from the Fabulous Flying Femmes aerial dancers and acrobatics, children’s activities, the Zuke’s River Dog Contest, and the Crazy Costume River Parade.

The Dolores River Festival is a community celebration of the Dolores River and the many ways it connects the community, the environment and our resources. It also draws attention to the Dolores River Basin and the challenges faced by local communities trying to balance economic development and riparian resource protection.
