The Arts Center stages ‘A Grand Night for Singing’

Durango is bringing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classics up to date in a brand new musical revue. “A Grand Night for Singing” opens at the Durango Arts Center on July 6 and shows on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 12.    

Die hard R&H fans probably never imagined “Shall We Dance?” as a comic pas de deux. However, Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie and composer Fred Wells have combined the timeless songs with fresh, innovative musical arrangements for the performance.

The show stars top Durango talent, Austin Hohnke, Jessica Jane Hagemeister, Landon Newton, Elizabeth Gray, Joshua Logan and Katherine Walker and is the Showtime is 8 p.m., and tickets are available in advance or at the door. For more information, call 259-2606.

Durango offers up ‘Salute to America’
What: Durango’s annual Fourth of July celebration
Where: Downtown Durango
When: Sun., July 4, beginning at 7:30 a.m.  

Once again, Durango is pulling out all the stops this Independence Day. A full slate of local events is scheduled for America’s birthday.

The festivities get under way at Rotary Park with an All-American Pancake Breakfast, organized by the Rotary Club of Durango, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. The Freedom Fun Run/Walk takes off from Rotary Park at 9 a.m., and all levels of runners and walkers are encouraged to join in for prizes and surprises.

The center of activity then moves to the 1200 block of Main and Buckley Park for “American Voices,” a public reading of major American documents presented and organized by Fort Lewis College. Readings run from 11 a.m.-noon. Following American Voices, kids under 18 will be selling their old toys, sports gear, clothes, music, books and more.

The Kiwanis Club will host a Family Picnic and Smokin’ 4th of July BBQ from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. in the 1200 block of Main Ave. Kiwanis will provide a beer garden, a competitive BBQ cook-off, arts and crafts booths, and more. Live music begins at noon and a variety of kids activities will be on tap.

A Stars and Stripes parade begins on Main Avenue at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the “Salute-to-America Street Dance” in the 800 block of Main. The dance kicks off with music by the High Rollers at 6:30 p.m. and ends with the “Salute to America Fireworks Display,” boasting more than 2,200 charges.

Residents are encouraged to walk, bike, car pool or use public transit for quicker access in and out of downtown.
